Customer Comments

 "Jerry,
Many thanks once again with providing me with such a beautiful flute in sound and esthetics. The quality is outstanding. Recently I've had the opportunity to play various flutes with great disappointments as yours surpasses all. You are truly an artist who creates outstanding
native Indian flutes with recording quality sounds. God Bless you and your hands, while I look forward to purchasing from you again, Thanks,"

"I'm crazy about the flute. I have another F# by a well-known maker, which is very nice, but it has a much more windy or breathy sound than yours. Yours has a fantastically pure sound, just like butter. I could play the low note all day just to listen to it. Many thanks!

Your friend,"

"I have received the flute and I'm really enjoying it.
I'm playing in a native Tahitian group with a nasal flute and know we can make improvisation with Tahitian flute and Indian native flute together.
In the next few weeks I will order another native
flute, perhaps a double.

Thanks a lot."

FYI

The Native American Flute is the only melodic wind instrument belonging to the People of this continent and the only instrument indigenous exclusively to the United States.

The Native American flute, while not common among all Nations, did indeed stretch from the west to the east. “Indian Love Flutes” have always been an important part of Native American culture.

Indian flutes are known for being made from aromatic cedar and other woods indigenous to the area that they were made in.

The Cherokee typically make
flutes from Cane.

Tone and Wood Choice
The tone of a Native American Flute is determined in part by the type of wood used. The softer woods (cedar, sassafras etc...) produce a warmer tone. The harder woods (red heart, osage orange etc...) produce a brighter tone. Tone is not volume. It is the texture of the sound. We offer you a large selection of wood choices.

How to Choose the Right Flute for You.
Email us if you have questions. ~ Click Here

1. Playing Ease
Your Native American Flute should be very responsive and not require "special" handling to perform well. Playing the 1/2 holes should be easy for you. A well crafted flute will perform with ease. If you've chosen the right size flute for your hands, you should be able to cover and uncover the finger holes easily without cramping or stretching. Your first flute should conform to you, not you to it. Simply put, if it's uncomfortable for you to play, you won't play.

The flute sizes that are most comfortable for beginner players are:

Large F
Large F#
Large G
Large Ab
Medium A
Medium Bb
Medium B
Medium C
Medium C#
Small D

The sizes of the Drone flutes that are most comfortable for beginner players are:

Medium A
Medium Bb
Medium B
Medium C
Medium C#
Small D

The size of the flute that is right for you depends on several things including:

1. Is this your 1st flute?
2. What size hands do you have? ie... a small woman or a 6 foot tall man?
3. Do you play other instruments?
4. Do you work in a profession that encourages limberness and dexterity in your fingers? ie... Are you used to stretching your fingers?

Talk with us, we can help you decide which flute size will be right for you. Phone: 1-417-535-6032, Email:
Jerry@fretwellflutes.com.

2. Sound Quality
Your Native American Flute should have a clear, non-breathy, non-hissy voice. The notes should sound solid and clean. Ask to hear sample flutes played before you buy. Any flute will sound "surreal" with effects, like reverb or chorus added to it. Ask to hear the flute without effects added. You want to hear the flute played without the aid of a microphone. Listen to the sound samples of our flutes on our website. Call us and we will play for you over the phone. 1-417-535-6032.

3. Volume
Without any electronic aid, you should be able to play your Native American Flute at a loud volume or a soft volume. A well crafted flute will do this. You will be able to play the flute we make for you at a loud or soft volume without the aid of a microphone.

4. Pitch
Standard A440 pitch is important if you want to play along with any other instrument. Being musicians, we feel it desirable to play our flutes along with other instruments. You can too. We make use of an electronic tuner while making our flutes. We will tune your Native American Flute to standard A440.

5. Guarantee
Your Native American Flute Maker should offer you an unconditional guarantee. If you are not completely satisfied with the quality craftsmanship and/or the quality voice of your flute, they should offer to replace your flute or refund your purchase price. We provide an unconditional guarantee.

Customer Comments

"Hello Jerry,

I received the low F# flute that you made for me a couple of months ago. I have looked at it, handled it, and played it for a little over two months and just want to let you know that I am very happy.

I wanted it made out of Blood wood, which you did. It is very beautiful and the sound is wonderful. I was concerned that the sound would be too harsh because of the hardness of the wood; but that simply isn't the case. The sound is clear but simply glorious.

In appearance, it is everything I wanted. Beautiful grain and finish, which pleases my eyes and make it more enjoyable to play. I display it safely behind the glass doors of a cabinet where I can enjoy looking at it every time I pass by.

I have gotten pretty good at playing it too! I know this because my dog doesn't hide behind my recliner any more. I'm still using only 5 holes but practicing various techniques to make a verity of sounds and effects.

I was also very pleased with the entire transaction. You provided me with information so that I could choose the correct flute for me. You delivered it in great condition when promised.

The first thing I did was to break out my electronic tuner and checked the tuning of each hole. You did a great job there too.

It was nice dealing with both you and Lisa. I would highly recommend you and your fretwell flutes.

Thanks again and wishing you the best."
